Tunji was what Bola had been looking for all her life. He treated her like a queen and had been twice promoted in the past years. People who knew the couple were wistfully envious of the two young love birds. Grace was interested but no one in town had been able to lure him away from Bola.
Bola, it seems just after a few months into her relationship with Tunji, was madly in love and believed she’d found her future husband. Her heart skipped a beat one evening when Tunji invited her over to his apartment for a special dinner. She was too exited to eat that she skipped lunch that day but bought two bottles of beer “Lust 84” [his favorite red wine]. She wore a slinky new jade dress , dabbed on a TV channel.
When Tunji opened the door he smiled and greeted her lovingly holding her for much longer than usual. The
dinner went brilliantly although Tunji had not more than two glasses of wine. Later, he looked at Bola in the eyes and saw that she looked suddenly sad and worried. She had every reason to be. Tunji held her hand and told her in a quiet voice that he felt too bad to end the relationship. She was dumb founded and left him for the next 15mins. Tunji explained at length how she would be a perfect woman for him. He said, he was no longer feeling for her. She recalled that Tunji told her how she slept overnight that he couldn't make sense out of her need wearing makeup to bed and reapply it when she wakes up. Nor could he bear her obsession with her weight or the length she went in putting his need. He told me he’d met me imperfect and was disappointed to see that I was obsessed with trying to destroy all perfections.
Tunji ended by saying that he felt he was holding her back from true happiness . The kind which came from real self confidence and acceptance of one’s flaws. Bola sat stunned not understanding why her efforts had led to rejection. She’d redecorated her house to accommodate his afro centric taste, she’d taken French lessons because she thought it was a romantic language. She’d even given up seeing her girlfriends thinking that she has found a true companion. How could he had not appreciate every thing she has done.
